Day 2: First Day at the University

Today was our first day at the University and it was a pleasure to meet such a welcoming group.

Rohana is a gracious host and had prepared an office space in the new Geology building which houses a new Thermo ICPMS and an impressive SEM facility too. We met with several Deans and department heads, including the Medical School at which I will present on Monday the 15th.

We started the day with a  jog along the Maheweli River or “Great Sandy River” which is the longest in Sri Lanka at 335 km (208 mi), and is fed by the largest drainage basin in the country (almost one-fifth of the total area of the island). The river reaches the Bay of Bengal on the southwestern side of Trincomalee Bay. The river and its tributaries are dammed at several locations to allow for irrigation in the dry zone, with almost 1,000 km2 (386 sq mi) of land irrigated.

The Mahaweli system supplies more than 40% of Sri Lanka's electricity needs through production of hydroelectricity from six dams.
